Surat – World’s Diamond Capital

An assortment of narrow streets and beautiful historical houses; the city is situated near the left bank of the Tapti river. It is the second largest city in the state of Gujrat and is well developed economically.

It is also referred to as the Manchester city of India because of the large productions of textiles. It is also the city of diamonds as most of the cutting work is done here; in this city of artistic talent.

The construction of the Surat railway station by the British is something to ponder upon; what with the platform being on the first floor where the train reaches by an inclined ramp.

The city’s weather is controlled by the Arabian Sea, with the maximum average temperature reaching 40 degree celsius. The capital of India and Mumbai has a straight connectivity with Surat via airlines.

The railways too connect the city with some major places like Patna, Jabalpur, Ahmedabad, Indore, Nagpur, Kolkata and many more. Local train services are also available in this evenly populated city.

Visitors might face traffic problems owing to the congestion on major highways passing through the city. Surat is said to have excellent roads and a few more expressways are in the pipeline.

Recently, in the year 2008; a new Bus Service was started by the city Mayor Dr .Kanubhai Mavani and it has the reputation of being the best city bus service in the country. Though sometimes; the frequency of the buses being sparse, leads the commuters to catch an auto-rickshaw; making it the main mode of local communication.

The most interesting fact is that the city is under constant surveillance under the IPS; vouching your safety.

Food is something that catches everyone’s heart and especially in our country; we can find a varied palate of dishes. The city is renowned for its Surati Cuisine; which ranges from the all time favourite Ghari (for the sweet toothed) , Undhiyo, Khaman and a lot more.

The food items are supposedly quite spicy. “Rekdis” is listed in the list of popular roadside food item. For the winter time visitors; a surprise awaits at the banks of the river Tapi.

Ponk, a roasted cereal is one of its kind and available only in this part of the world.

A Must Visit

There is the famous Surat Fort, also known as the Surat Castle; one of the most popular heritage monuments in the city. The Jain Temple is for the eminent devotees.

It’s four hundred years old and is known for its vegetable dye paintings of Jain priest Acharya Hemchandra, King Kumarpala and the Solanki King. Then there’s Sardar Patel Museum having a collection of over a 10,000 specimens of arts and crafts.

The Duma Beach is for the free-spirited, people who are looking for some relaxation along with some sightseeing. It is located along the navigable Arabian Sea.

The history lovers can visit Dandi where the Father of the Nation started with his famous Dandi March.
